At Cambia, people are at the core of what we do. In a recent Legacy Arts article “Paying It Forward,” Cambia CEO Mark Ganz shared how his personal experiences have helped him shape Cambia’s consumer-centric mission.
Here are some highlights from the article:
Caring for Both Body and Spirit
Mark’s holistic view of health care stems from observing his father:
“My dad was a family doctor of the old-fashioned variety. He truly took the time and really cared about knowing his patients completely. He tended to their spirit as much as he did their body because he knew there was an inextricable link.”
Leaving a Legacy
Like his father, Mark’s focus is on improving lives of individuals, not institutions. He described the legacy he hopes to build, saying:
“I want my children and grandchildren to live and to have a journey in health and in fitness from birth to completion of life where it is all seamless and transparent. That is a legacy worth leaving.”
Empowering Health Care Employees
Mark describes current health care challenges as symptoms of the institution, not the people working in it:
“In the current system, you get people who come into work and they become a doctor or a nurse and they really want to help other people, but all the economic signals cause them to make seemingly logical business decisions that actually lead to suboptimal results for the people they are there to serve. It’s the model that’s the enemy. Not the people working in it.”
Paying It Forward
In the article, Mark describes an experience of kindness and generosity that has forever inspired him to pay it forward. While a student at Georgetown University, Mark had financial troubles that were resolved by the generosity of the University President. When Mark asked how he could repay the funds, the President told Mark, “Because I know you’re going to be successful, the way you get to pay this back is to pay it forward. Make a difference in others’ lives as you grow older.”
