
This time of year, we reflect and give thanks—both for friends and family, and for those who care for our loved ones in times of need. As we come to the end of both National Family Caregiver Month and National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, it’s an important time to express gratitude for our nation’s caregivers and to consider the challenges they face.
The Portland Business Journal’s “National strategy needed to help family caregivers” outlines the essential role that caregivers play, the challenges they face and opportunities to increase support.
According to Families Caring for an Aging America, nearly 18 million Americans act as a family caregiver, around half of which support adults with high needs. While this role plays a critical function in caring for family and loved ones, it puts them at increased risk for chronic health issues and emotional distress. In order to increase support for these individuals, players across the health care industry need to come together to create meaningful solutions.
