What is interoperability?
Simply put, health care interoperability is about enabling secure, scalable data exchange between payers, providers and patients. At the technical core of health care interoperability is HL7 FHIR - a newly emerging standard describing data formats and elements and an application programming interface for exchanging electronic health records.
What is the benefit of interoperability?
One of the greatest obstacles in the U.S. health care system today is poor data sharing. Interoperability in health care can improve system efficiency, care coordination and quality, health outcomes and affordability for consumers and the broader health care system. When members have access to all their health data, they are in a better position to make better choices about care and treatment. When providers have a complete view of a member’s medical history and the ability to securely share that data with other providers, they can provide better-coordinated care overall for our members.
How are we different?
Cambia is a leader in innovating with regional and national partners to securely exchange members’ health data with providers. Working with our provider partners and national FHIR accelerator groups like the Da Vinci Project and CARIN Alliance, we have delivered multiple FHIR-based interoperability solutions to providers and the members we serve.
National thought leaders: Chief Technology Officer Kirk Anderson has been on the Da Vinci Steering Committee since its inception and is currently the board chair of Da Vinci. Interoperability Strategist Dave Degandi is on the Da Vinci Operating Committee and was one of six 2020 Da Vinci Community Champion winners. Amol Vyas, Chief Interoperability Architect, is the lead author of CARIN artifacts used nationwide for interoperability. Anderson, Degandi and Vyas have been featured presenters at multiple national events and conferences on health care interoperability, including the White House Blue Button Developers Conference (BBDC), HIMSS, HLTH2.0, AHIP, BCBSA National Summit and AWS Re:Invent.
