SPOKANE – Asuris Northwest Health paid $210 million for the medical care of its fully insured members in 2013, or $3,474 per member, according to unaudited figures filed March 3 with the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner. Asuris spent 87.3 cents of every premium dollar for medical services.
“The best protection for our members is financial stability, so we can be here to pay their claims for a long time to come,” said Brady Cass, Asuris president. “While our 2013 results came in slightly below the break-even mark, our three-year average shows we are financially strong, reflecting our nonprofit values and our commitment to members.”
With a gross income of $241 million, Asuris ended 2013 with a net loss of 1.4 percent, as claims increases outpaced premium by about $10 million.
Although Asuris is nonprofit, it is required to pay taxes, estimated at $5.5 million for 2013. That includes an assessment of $1.4 million for the Washington State Health Insurance Program, $4.1 million in Washington premium taxes.
